Precious Lord, we seek you out on a day remembered for tragedy, heartache, and loss.  We are a grieving people who lost loved ones and friends.  We are a hurting people who were wounded, injured, battered, and bruised.  Across our land and in our faces, we still carry the horrible scars of that September day.

We are a nation who has lost sons and daughters, husbands and wives, neighbors and friends.  The pursuit of freedom has come with a price at home and abroad. There is pain and suffering from our time of conflict and war.

Redeem us Lord.  We cry out for your presence.  We cry out for your tender mercy. Comfort our grief.  Heal our brokenness.  Restore us anew.  Grant us your perfect peace through Jesus Christ, the Risen Savior.  Amen.

Christians of all stripes can join together this Saturday and pray for Syria.  From the Catholics to the Quakers, everyone should be able to set aside their differences and unite in a time of prayer.

This long civil war has taken over 100,000 lives, created over 2 million refugees, and unleashed the use of chemical weapons.  No matter where you stand on the current political issue.  Make time to pray for the people, the victims, the homeless, the starving, and for a solution to the conflict.

It is good for us to remember that there is an authority higher than the military.  Let us petition the Lord and ask for his mercy and peace to surround Syria.

People across America are mourning the loss of 19 Prescott Arizona firefighters.  The special team of wildfire experts died on Sunday, battling the Yarnell Hill fire.  The wildfire combined dry conditions and a rapid wind shift into a lethal situation.  Sunday now stands as the largest loss of firefighters’ lives since 9/11/01.

Christians in Syria continue to suffer persecution and strife in the midst of an ongoing civil war.  Open Doors USA is encouraging Christians worldwide to pray for the war-torn country on May 11.

“As Christians in Syria continue to suffer from the devastating effects of the two-year-old civil war including killings, kidnappings, homelessness, lack of food and shelter and closing of schools; they are also seeing that God’s hand is at work as all denominations are joining in passionate prayer,” Open Doors USA interim President/CEO Steve Ridgway said in a recent statement.

Since March 2011, Syria’s Ba’ath Party government, led by President Bashar al-Assad, has been involved in a brutal civil war against rebels trying to overthrow the government, resulting in the death of nearly 70,000.

It is difficult to image the hardships that the Syrian church is enduring half a world away.  Finding food and medicine is a struggle.  As daily survival is already difficult, Christians are being persecuted, killed, and church leaders continue to be kidnapped.

Please add these believers to your prayer list on Saturday and join the international prayer effort.

Reports are sharing that an American Stratotanker crashed in Kyrgyzstan.  The Wichita Eagle reported on its website the plane was a KC-135 refueling tanker, which was based at Wichita’s McConnell Air Force Base.

A search is underway for members of the crew.

Little is currently known and updates will likely be slow.  Right now the unknown is a heavy burden for military families across the Midwest as they are dealing with the “what ifs” of this situation.

One thing that we can do is pray for all the families at McConnell Air Force Base.  May the peace of Christ sustain them and minister to their needs during this difficult time.

The tragic events of April 15th continue to unfold.  Today, two bombs exploded in the packed streets near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, killing two people and injuring more than 130.

Please continue to pray for the families who are mourning the loss of a loved one.  Boston area hospitals also reported at least 134 injured, with 15 of them critically.  We also need to pray for the wounded who are in critical condition.

While not immediately apparent, we should also praise God that more were not injured in this senseless act.  The Boston Marathon routinely has some 23,000 runners and countless supporters along the way.  It is one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious marathons that draws participants from across the globe.  It is held on Patriots Day, which commemorates the first battles of the American Revolution, at Concord and Lexington in 1775.

As people continue to compile their prayer lists, we should also remember first responders like the EMS, police, firefighters, and National Guard.  Their efforts today, though bloody and traumatic, helped to preserve life and provide emergency care to the wounded.

Cry out to the Lord and share the concerns of your heart, no matter how heavy it may be.

The Senate confirmed Army Lt. Gen. Frank J. Grass as the next chief of the National Guard Bureau and Air Force Maj. Gen. Joseph L. Lengyel as the bureau’s vice chief during a late evening session July 26.

Grass, who also will be a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, will be promoted to the rank of general. Lengyel will earn his third star.

The Senate’s action followed Grass’ July 19 hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee.

“To the men and women and families of the Army and the Air National Guard … you can know that I will be your strongest advocate,” Grass said during the hearing.

Asked about the his role on the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Grass said, “As a member of the Joint Chiefs, I [will] definitely have to bring forward the adjutants generals’ and governors’ thoughts, concerns, on the homeland mission. … I also need to be able to balance that with the federal mission and deployable forces and be able to give my best military advice to the secretary of defense as well as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs.”

Grass will succeed Air Force Gen. Craig R. McKinley, the National Guard’s first four-star general and first to be appointed to the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

May 3, 2012 is the National Day of Prayer.  Events will be held across the county where people are encouraged to pray for our nation, our elected leaders, the military, and each other.  The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people of all faiths to pray.  It was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman.

While the day may be used to focus on government functions and civic purposes, feel free to make space for personal issues.  Allow a time for repentance.  Make time to renew your relationship with the Lord.  Share the inner concerns of your heart and take them to the Throne of our Creator.

It is easy to get wrapped up in the events of work, school, and family, but share some of tomorrow’s valuable time with our Heavenly Father.
